The reason why you are diagnosed with Diabetic Nephropathy is that you have diabetes. There are two types of diabetes, namely type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is congenital, while type 2 is caused by various factors. Besides, their onset time is different.

If it is Type 1 Diabetes, you do not only have proteinuria, but also retinopathy. If you have been an adult, it is very likely for you to have Diabetic Nephropathy.

If it is Type 2 Diabetes, it is seldom for you to develop Diabetic Nephropathy within 5 years. If only traces of protein is detected in urine during the examination and no retinal lesions were found, you may not have Diabetic Nephropathy.

In fact, only less than half of diabetic patients who have microalbuminuria are diagnosed with Diabetic Nephropathy after renal biopsy.
